New Discoveries of Health Benefits of Kodukkapuli or Jungli Jalebi
Kodukkapuli (Pithecellobium dulce) belongs to pea family (Fabaceae), which is native to the Pacific Coast and adjacent highlands of Mexico, Central America, and northern South America. This species had been introduced and naturalized in the Caribbean, Florida, Guam, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Thailand and the Philippines. It is also called as Jungli Jalebi or Manila Tamarind or Camachile.
- The bark is used as an astringent for dysentery in India
- The pulp from the fruits is said to be astringent and used to stop haemorrhage and to control coughing up of blood.
- The ground seed is sometimes traditionally used to clean ulcers.

Fresh flowers yield a glycoside quercitin (plant flavonol) which has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. The seeds contain dulcin (bisdesmodic triterpenoid saponin) which is known to have anti-inflammatory properties.
