The scientific name of Charoli is “Buchanania lanzan”. It is a deciduous tree of the Anacardiaceae plant family. The plant originated in the Indian sub-continent and is widely grown throughout Burma, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, India, and Yunnan. Charoli is pale in colour, usually light brown and has dark shades and patches. The shell of Charoli is hard to crack but the fruit inside is soft. Charoli seed is generally flat and round in shape.
Grown in India: Charoli is found growing naturally as wild stand in the tropical deciduous forests of the north, western and central India mostly in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra. In Tamil, it is called as “Shara Parpu”.
